Nurture Group was introduced on a weekly basis in 2014 to provide short term, inclusive intervention for some of our younger children. The group usually consists of between six and twelve Year One children and is run by two members of staff, Mrs Ferris and Mrs Coulson. The group takes place on Friday afternoons in a supportive, nurturing environment and children attend according to their individual need. Learning and social and emotional needs are assessed and whatever support is necessary is provided by staff to minimise the possibility of barriers to learning in the children’s own classrooms.
During the sessions, great emphasis is placed on the development of confidence and self esteem, language and communication skills and interaction with peers. Nothing is taken for granted and everything is explained, supported by role-modelling, demonstration and the use of gesture as appropriate. The relationship between the children and adults is always one of nurture and support and each small step is celebrated. Consequently the children develop confidence, become more responsive to others, learn self respect and take pride in positive behaviour and achieving.
The group has proved to be very successful in the past and has had a positive impact in children’s own classrooms and also at home.
