Bonjour! Bienvenue en français à l’école primaire de Burnopfield.
At Burnopfield Primary School we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, in particular the key skills of speaking and listening. It also extends their knowledge of how language works. We recognise that learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own culture and that of others.
Children across all key stages are given the opportunity to dip their toes into languages, whether its learning songs and actions with KidsLingo in the Early Years or developing their Spanish through games and crafts in Golden Time experiences in Key Stage 1. Burnopfield Primary School offers language opportunities for all.
The fun of French begins in Key Stage 2 where children follow the Salut! scheme of work. Children access an hour of French teaching every fortnight, and are given opportunities to work as individuals, small teams or even whole class to perfect their French accent. The children begin by learning key French vocabulary, including greetings, colours, numbers and animals, before applying their newly learned skills to games, conversations and even a French song or two! At the end of each unit children engage in a story bringing together all their learning and the vocabulary, giving them a chance to really show off what they know.
At Burnopfield Primary School we are extremely lucky to have excellent links with external providers for after school clubs. KidsLingo is a engaging and interactive learning French experience for our Key Stage 2 children. It uses songs, games, Makaton, active storytelling and ‘let’s pretend’ to successfully help children learn languages. Lingotots is our popular Spanish after school club for Reception and Key Stage 1 children. It is ‘language learning made fun’ through songs, stories, drama and even a little bit play! Who wouldn’t want to be Lingotot Star of the week!
The intent of our French curriculum is to ensure individual identity and community, and learning another language can do a great deal to shape children’s ideas in this critical area as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language.
Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children to develop speaking and listening skills. Also to develop aspirational goals: by broadening their horizons; learning about other countries and cultures; and raising awareness of potential careers which involve language skills.
