Maths

At Burnopfield Primary School it is our aim to provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to become skilled Mathematicians and creative problem solvers.
All children have daily Maths lessons which are lively, imaginative and engaging in order to facilitate an interest in and enjoyment of the subject. Maths lessons are meaningful with an emphasis on the application of mathematics to real life examples.

Our Curriculum

At Burnopfield we follow a concrete, pictoral and abstract (CPA) approach to teaching Maths. This allows use to use a range of practical resources as well as visual images to aid understanding.
Throughout the year children are taught about a number of areas of mathematics including place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fraction, shape, measures and statistics (graphs and charts).

Children are encouraged to develop fluency in Maths and apply their understanding through problem solving and explaining their reasoning. Both written and mental methods are taught alongside each other to secure deep understanding.
Children are taught to talk about their mental processing and written methods using appropriate language. They secure deeper learning by explaining to others. We teach new mathematical language throughout the year and encourage children to use correct language at all times, both verbally and in their work.

At Burnopfield Primary School we believe that rapid recall of mathematical facts including times tables is essential. We have a weekly lesson to teach and practise this rapid recall.
Children are expected to know all of their times tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4 and we practise this regularly at school. However, parents can also help their children by practising recall of times tables at home.

In addition to this, children take part in ‘5-a-day’ which is a short session each afternoon to recap and practise Maths skills.

Problem solving is embedded throughout all aspects of our Maths lessons and also through weekly Maths investigations. During this time, children are able to apply Maths skills learnt that week to a problem or investigation. Children are taught specific problem solving skills and are able to explore problems for themselves in a practical way. These are fun sessions which result in some fabulous and innovative work!

The school environment

We celebrate Maths at Burnopfield Primary School and in every classroom you will see a Maths display. These are used to celebrate successes in Maths and to support children’s learning.

During the school year we have dedicated Maths days and Enterprise day, which allow children to experience Maths in an enjoyable and meaningful way.
Children are given the opportunity to apply Maths skills in other areas of the curriculum such as Science.

If you have any questions about Maths at Burnopfield, please speak to your child’s class teacher or Mr Robertshaw (Maths Lead).
