Swimming
At Burnopfield Primary we recognise that swimming is an important life skill. Our children start swimming lessons in year 3 where they attend lessons for a full term. This is followed by our year 4 children and year 5 children and then children in year 6 are given the opportunity to return if they are not yet meeting the required levels.
The programme of study for swimming and water safety states that:
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Our year six cohort 2019-2020 results are as follows.
71% could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
58% could use a range of strokes effectively,
54% perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
